This year the city of Chicago is exporting another agent of change, this one being the sonic prescription for the weak stream of screamo-pop mall schlock dribbled out by the flaccid playlists of FM corp-rock stations. Lola Balatro has released its debut CD, an obamic fistbump of an album that would have made E.E. Cummings write in all caps.
On the 10-song LP, the band has successfully coupled a Dave Grohl-like propensity for hookmaking with the articulatory mastery of Bob Costas, all to create an aural onslaught potent enough to make the major labels repentant for their perpetuance of nü-metal and the then-aphrodesical-now-contraceptive ballads of hair metal. To say that Lola Balatro is the illegitimate child of Gordon Lightfoot and Alice from Alice in Chains would be a falsehood, for this offspring is quite legitimate.
